This paper argues for a public‑friendly nickname for the Madden‑Julian Oscillation (MJO). The authors suggest adding “La Ola‑MJO,” where “La Ola” is Spanish for “The Wave,” to help people picture the MJO as a traveling wave of weather that circles the tropics every one to two months. The goal is to make the phenomenon easier to remember and explain outside scientific circles.
The team explains why the name fits. When the MJO is active over the Maritime Continent it produces wind and rainfall patterns that look similar to those of La Niña, a well‑known climate pattern. The key difference is that the MJO moves eastward around the equator in about 30–60 days, while La Niña tends to stay in place for many months. “La Ola” evokes a stadium “human wave,” which the authors say mirrors the MJO’s eastward travel and makes the idea visual and memorable.
At a high level, the MJO is the main source of weather variability on timescales of a few weeks to a couple of months in the tropics. It influences rainfall, monsoons, tropical cyclones, and events such as humid and marine heatwaves.
